The 20^th Duras Winegrowers’ fête - Sunday 8^th August 2010

A fête for everyone! Gourmets and connoisseurs of good food, the curious, the impassioned, laymen, history buffs, sporty types, party goers, the jolly,… you are all eagerly awaited at the 20th Duras Winegrowers’ fête!

A great opportunity to discover a productive wine growing patrimony and to appreciate the wine producing process from the vine to the glass.

The Côtes de Duras AOC vineyard produces a wide range of wines that delight the palate, from dry and mellow white wines to reds and rosés.

Around 30 winegrowers will open bottles and share their passion with you within the majestic halls of the Château de Duras.

Nestled in a beautiful valley on the Charente / Dordogne border and set within the ground of the Longeveau estate, our 9 hole, par 64 (2x32) golf course offers a challenge to golfers of all abilities.

The greens and tees are fully irrigated and there are plenty of bunkers and other obstacles that come into play.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our course and have a fleet of modern machinery to the keep the course in top condition.

An enthusiastic and multinational club runs throughout the year, with regular tournaments and social events to which our residents and visitors are often welcome.

Daily, weekly and annual rates are available with discounted green fees for residents staying at Longeveau.

Equipment hire, supplies and tuition are available from the bar-clubhouse. The new bar offers great food and drink all year round, with superb views overlooking the course and coupled with a great atmosphere.

Tennis at Longeveau

Le Manoir de Longeveau provides the perfect setting for a game of tennis. We have three all-weather tennis courts, two of them floodlit, attractively landscaped into the sloping ground below the bar-clubhouse. The courts are open throughout the year and the tennis can be as serious or relaxed as you wish.

We also have a compact tennis court at Longeveau, located in the sports barn, off the courtyard. This is great for children and good fun for the grown ups. It also serves as a welcome retreat from the heat of the midday sun, or likewise, the occasional thunderstorm!

We do not generally operate a booking system at Longeveau, though occasionally one or more courts are reserved at times for coaching or tournaments etc. Please check the notice boards. Otherwise, they are available for play as you wish.

Racquets and balls are available for those who do not have their own equipment. A small supply of new balls and grips are usually available for sale in the bar.

Social events and tournaments run regularly throughout the year and seasonally, ensuring plenty of fun, new friends and playing partners. Coaching is available from a local English speaking CCA qualified tennis coach.

We often have tennis groups staying at Longeveau. Groups of all sizes and abilities are welcome with special packages to suit your requirements. Dedicated court time and /or local courts can be arranged.

Dog Racing

Do you own a dog in the SIGHT HOUND group, for example Greyhound, Whippet, Afghan,Saluki etc., if so why not come and see what this club could offer you and your pet.

The dogs race on an open field course and/or on a circuit, at club level, no gambling, drugs, mistreatment or other nasties, it is just for fun. All the dogs are pets and thoroughly enjoy the day out. If you wish to take it further there are competitions but even at these the most you will win is a bottle of wine or a cup, NO MONEY.

The club has members from England, France, Ireland & Switzerland so its a good place to practice or perfect your French, the dogs though all seem to speak the same language.

Old dogs are never “ got rid of “ but just retire and stay with their owners and come to the club meetings for a day out with old friends.

Cadanses Folk - Traditional French Music and Dance

Lessons every two weeks, dances throughout the year - come and join! . . . .

What is traditional French folk music and dance?

Many of you will have seen the nice ladies and gentlemen at the Fetes in their flowery dresses and waistcoats performing a colourful display - but this is very much a historical reenactment of folk dancing at the beginning of the last century.

What we do is very much more up to date - and fancy dress is not required!

The membership fees for Cadanse Folk are as follows:

Adult = 40 Euros per year;

Couples = 60 Euros per year.

The membership fee covers the hire of the hall, expenses for bands and dance teachers and subsidises the various events which are organised throughout the year - good value!

Steve is a veteran racing cyclist currently living and racing in France. Cycling is his life, it shapes just about everything he does, and when people ask him what he does, he normally says that "I am a cyclist". He has some racing success over the years, but that’s not because he is a talented athlete. In fact when he was tested at college while studying sports physiology he was told that he would never amount to much as a sportsman.

Just an ordinary bloke, who works hard on his bike. He writes in the hope that he might inspire others to become cyclists. There really is nothing else that compares for Steve.

New Spring/Summer collection by local artist Steve Barker is now being shown

at the Domaine de la Roseraie, Brantome.

The main theme of the exhibition is emotions and has been inspired by the artist’s love of black and white photography.

Hidden away in the Charantaise countryside, somewhere between Aubeterre-sur-Dronne and Montmoreau, is an exciting new restaurant, ‘Les Trois Petits Cochons’ (otherwise translated as the 3 little pigs!).

The restaurant is located at the popular Manoir de Longeveau holiday village, also known locally for its golf course ‘Golf d’Aubeterre’.

The restaurant offers good food at good value. Lunch times are laid back, with a selection of homemade specialties, from burgers to salads; from vegetarian to all day breakfasts.

Claude Bourbon

Born in France in the early 60’s, Claude Bourbon grew up in Switzerland, where he was classically trained for many years. This finger picking guitarist has performed and studied all over the world; he has crafted an unbelievable fusion of classical and jazz, with ethereal Eastern influences, Spanish and Latin elements with strains of Western folk.

The unique Monsieur Bourbon is a formidable performer. He may have his roots in the blues, but he is inspired by music and song from all around the world, taking these sounds and weaving them into a performance of blues, rock, jazz, songs and melodies that defy a label, all delivered with a gravely voice.

Claude’s inimitable style incorporates all five digits on each hand dancing independently but in unison, plucking, picking and strumming at such speed and precision that his fingers often seem to melt into a blur. Thousands of people in the UK, Europe and USA have enjoyed listening to this virtuoso and for the majority of his audience it is an experience that compels them to return again and again to hear and watch him play, as his fingers lightly dance over the strings of his guitar and create a unique sound that is ’Claude’.

Starting to play guitar at the age of 15, it was the strains of an instrumental version of ‘House of the Rising Sun’ seeping from a neighbour’s garage that ignited the fire in Claude’s soul. He then studied classical guitar for a period, but soon realised that his feeling was more for improvisation than written music, “…as the music is a tool to express yourself…”.

Now based in the UK, some of this guitarists’ influences allow us a fascinating insight into this remarkable musician; Paco De Lucia: Deep Purple’s Richie Blackmore; Joaquin Rodrigo; JJ Cale, Monty Python; JS Bach and Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks…. One reviewer even noted that although “Claude’s roots were in blues, that is like saying Leonardo da Vinci was a painter”. Intrigued?

Claude has played countless venues, performing with several top international musicians including sax player STEVE GROSSMAN (Miles Davis band) and drummer CHARLIE MORGAN (Elton John, Gary Moore)

It looks like a restaurant you would pass by from the outside but inside lies a treasure of fabulous country culinary delights. The main menu stays the same but the food varies with the seasons and is the best value for money restaurant we have been to in France. If you have a hearty appetite, look no further than the cote de boeuf, huge, great quality and delicately cooked over beechwood which an ever changing variety of potatoes or cous-cous and seasonal vegetables. Don’t be alarmed if some soup arrives, unordered, in winter- it’s wonderful and there’s no charge, and the owner’s seasonal recommendations are a must. For example, in asparagus season, asparagus with smoked salmon, capers, onions and melted cheese- divine, or new-season lamb cooked in Moroccan spices.

The Charente Limousine Exchange was initially founded in 2003 and we meet to exchange news, views, ideas and information.

We concentrate on improving the provision of French language courses, sharing experience, skills and knowledge between members, providing information to members on living and working in France and working with

“Connect for Friendship”

The group is the brain child of Dutch couple Frans and Toke Verschuren, who, when thy moved to the town nearly 18 months ago, struggled at first to find much of the information they needed to establish them in their new life.

The aim is to set up an International English speaking group helping newcomers and established people in the town of St Yrieix and its surrounding villages.

Apart from the British, it is hoped that local French and Dutch people will be joining too, enabling everyone to benefit from an exchange of language and culture.

The general monthly "meetings" will initially take the form of a casual drop in for coffee and a chat and will be driven by "user demand".

From this a range of activities will be developed to cater for the varying and individual interests of the group.

Owing to its increasing popularity and ever increasing attendance, the Connect for friendship association (Connectff) has now affiliated with Familles Rurales within the local area and will therefore now meet at a new venue.

We want meetings to be very informal where we can all get together and talk horses and maybe you can put forward any ideas that you might have about the way the group moves forward.

We will be holding monthly meetings, probably in Perigueux because that is about the most central place in the Dordogne but we would be open to maybe having it in other areas to allow access to more members.

We would like to have guest speakers and hopefully arrange clinics and workshops that you could attend if it was an area that captured your interest.

We believe that it will be a fantastic opportunity to network, exchange information and ideas and gain support.

Sometimes here in France one can feel a bit isolated and it is nice to know that there are others around you who have overcome a problem that you might be having.

If you are able to come to any of the meetings it would be appreciated if you could let me know that you will be coming so that I can let the staff at The Star know approximate numbers.

A GEM to Help Depression

Those who suffer from depression know only too well the desperate feeling of isolation the illness can bring.

The self help group (GEM) has been set up to help those with mental health problems to meet others in similar situations and share problems and experiences.

The P.R.I.S.M. association. (Prevention, reintegration, information in mental health), chaired by the doctor Emile Roger Lombertie, has a branch of GEM in Limoges and Saint-Junien, and building on the success of these groups will be opening a new session

at Saint-Yrieix La Perche

In partnership with the C.H. Esquirol and the UNAFAM (national Union of the friends and the family of psychic patients), GEM has been set up to help those who suffer from psychological troubles and offer them ideas on ways to break the isolation.

The group provide ideas and strategies to help members to overcome the day to day difficulties brought about by their illness.

It is believed around a quarter of the population of Limousin seek help from psychiatrist services or have psychological problems at some time in their lives.

CANCER SUPPORT IN FRANCE

CSF provides an information and listening service for Anglophones affected by cancer, and currently has branches covering 5 Departments in France with three more in the pipeline.

They offer support through visits at home or in hospital, guide clients and their carers to other sources of advice and help, and provide access to written information about cancer and its treatment.

Fund Raising Events:

We are looking for help towards the printing costs involved in producing leaflets and brochures outlining the support we offer to people and for the printing of posters and flyers to advertise fund raising events.

Wood Turning – Tuition and Courses

Beginners courses and Intermediate and beyond………

We live and work in the Dordogne, South West France. Set midway between Angoulême, capital of the Charente and Périgueux the capital of the Dordogne, and, in our humble opinion, one of the most beautiful parts of France.

The setting of my atelier “l’ame du bois” is spectacular with uninterrupted panoramic views and an abundance of wild life. We are in the flight path of the Grue(cranes) and, you can see these massive flocks of migrating birds in early Spring going North to the Baltic and late autumn going South to Spain for the Winter. We are also with buzzards, kites and other birds of prey. Red squirrels, deer and sanglier (wild boar) occasionally make their presence known.

All courses are informal, hands on, one-to-one and aimed at your particular interests for you, the student. The pace of the course is to suit you, nobody else.

Testing the water- Come and make a bowl

“Testing the water” is designed for those who want to satisfy their curiosity and take their first step into wood turning with creating a bowl on the lathe to take away at the end of the session. Just fun !

Beginners Course for face plate turning - at a pace to suit you

On this course attention will be paid to correct tool for the job, tool sharpening, different turning techniques , choosing woods, finishes etc after which you will go away with a sound understanding of wood turning and you can expect to make items such as a bowl, platter or a hollow form or all if time permits.

Intermediate and Beyond

As with all other courses, this course is structured to individual needs and aimed at those that have a sound understanding of basic practices and principles but wish to aspire to projects that require a greater level of skill. Natural edge bowls, green/wet turning, hollow forms, bowls, platters, natural edge vases are some of the things that can be built into the course.

Specialist - Large Diameter and wall sculptures

This course is for the experienced turner wanting to make a large turning and most probably has not got the facilities in their own atelier.

All courses are non-residential, but accommodation can be found near by, B&B, Chamber d’hote, hotel or campsite. A detailed list can of accommodation can be emailed to you or why not look at the Holiday Section on this web site.
